about
This song is set in the ruins of a theatre, in a world where music and art have been allowed to die out and are nothing more than a memory. Written in darker pandemic days where this seemed a distinct possibility, it's a cautionary tale about the lack of arts funding and musical education in the UK, and a reminder to keep creating and not allow it to become a reality.
lyrics
People
There were people
Close your eyes and
You’ll still see them
In the circle
Trading laughter
And its neighbour
Tears were shed here
Love made its bed here
And here it lies
Still breathing
Songs of mourning
In the evening
Every evening
At the curtain
All so certain
In the eternity
Of their poetry
Music
There was music
In the brickwork
In the fabric
Of our nation
Close your eyes and
You’ll still hear it
Like a relic
Cased in amber,
Crystal anger
At this freedom
Unrequired
Undesired
All conspired in
This passive downfall
A lonely horncall
No reply
